Continued investigation into the molecular basis of animal development has led to novel theories of how the basic animal body plans evolved. However, these theories have not in general been constrained by either Neodarwinian theory or by the fossil record. This project aims to integrate information from arthropod and other population studies in the fossil record, reconstructing morphological routes of evolution from stem group fossils and molecular studies of modern development in order to constrain evolutionary theory. Exceptionally well constrained fossil populations from the Cambrian of Scandinavia will be used to approach the first task; the lower and middle Cambrian exceptionally preserved fossils from the USA and China the second, and molecular developmental studies on key basal taxa the third, involving state-of-the-art genomic and transcriptomic analysis. Our aim is a truly integrated view of the most basic patterns of evolution seen in the fossil record, and a critical analysis of current theory that purports to explain it. This work is deeply embedded in a well-established research network within Europe; it will extend it to include colleagues in other Swedish universities and within Uppsala.
