The growing numbers of frail elderly (80+) create an increased demand for care services of high medical and social quality. At the same time, the marketization and commercialization of elder care services have given rise to a new plurality of care providers in Sweden, many of whom operate on a for-profit basis. Given the difficulties of monitoring a service like nursing home care, which is provided in closed settings and where user voices are weak, there has been a growing concern about its quality. The primary aim of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of what explains variations in care quality among nursing homes for the elderly in Sweden by systematically investigating the relative importance of different types of quality factors for outcome quality. Outcome quality will be measured both through objective, or clinical, measures such as nutritional status, falls and pressure ulcers, and subjective measures like resident satisfaction. Additionally, the project will also conduct in-dept case studies
