Title [sv]
Den improviserade fugan i Tyskland och Italien mellan 1680 och 1750
Title [en]
The Improvised Fugue in Germany and Italy between 1680 and 1750
Abstract [en]
Although it is undisputed that renowned composers such as G.F. Händel and J.S. Bach improvised fugues off the cuff at contests and in concerts, these skills are hardly heard in performance today. This research project investigates how keyboard players learnt the art of improvising fugues in Italy and Germany during the period 1680 and 1750. Recent research in the Italian pedagogical traditions at the Neapolitan conservatories has revealed a great deal of new information on the role of fugal improvisations in the training of becoming a musician or composer. There are good reasons to assume that the German tradition of improvising fugues was heavily influenced by Italian traditions. The improvisation of fugue expositions will be studied through the tradition of organ versetti in both Italian and German sources. The versetti partimenti recently identified in Italian archives may tell us a great deal about the pedagogy of setting up fugues. My newly instigated databases of the Italian partimento and the solfeggio will provide a solid foundation to identify exercises in sources that were used in this training. The Italian methods of instruction in Music Theory inspire today's classes in harmony and counterpoint through their pratical approach in a growing number of countries. Leuven is not only an important center for this branch ofhistorical musicology, the living tradition of organ improvisation in Belgium and France will certainly provide important impulses to this project.
