Constraining early animal evolution: palaeobiological, geological and developmental approaches

Continued investigation into the molecular basis of animal development has led to novel theories of how the basic animal body plans evolved. However, these theories have not in general been constrained by either Neodarwinian theory or by the fossil record. This project aims to integrate evolutionary studies of both fossil taxa from the exceptionally-preserved Cambrian fossil record (notably the USA and China) with molecular studies of key and poorly-known extant taxa – most importantly the onychophorans. These studies will be placed within a rigorous phylogenetic framework, and we also intend to make investigations into the timing of important Cambrian evolutionary events through a combination of novel relative and absolute timescales. Our aim is to generate a truly integrated view of early animal evolution, involving state-of-the art transcriptome analysis and (for the first time in these organisms) functional studies. Our work is deeply embedded in a Europe-wide research network and provides an ideal training-ground for the next generation of evo-devo workers.
