Title [sv]
Logistik i grekiska helgedomar.
Title [en]
Logistics in Greek sanctuaries. Exploring the human experience of visiting the gods
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
The project concerns the international conference “Logistics in Greek sanctuaries” at the Swedish Institute at Athens, 13-16 September 2018. Greek sanctuaries have been studied by scholars for more than 150 years, but mainly with a focus on temples, statues, monuments and sacrificial ritual. The conference adopts a different and novel perspective, that of the human visitor, in order to explore the hands-on, logistical experience of someone coming to a Greek sanctuary. Of interest is how people travelled to the location and once there, the logistics as to where they slept, cooked, ate, drank and took care of their hygiene, but also how trash and waste were handled, how transport and sacrificial animals were cared for, and if markets occurred and what was bought and sol. In short, to what extent did the architecture and activities in Greek sanctuaries reflect the needs of the humans and animals present? The logistics in Greek sanctuaries have been largely overlooked in previous research due to the fragmentary, scattered and inconspicuous nature of the evidence. The conference gathers 24 scholars, experts on various kinds of empirical evidence and aspects of ancient sanctuaries. A more profound understanding of the practical and mundane activity at sanctuary visits offers new perspectives to the traditional study of Greek cult places by focusing on other sides of ancient Greek religion and society than those usually explored.

Abstract [en]

Scholarly study of ancient Greek sanctuaries has tended to focus on religion and ritual, monuments, deities, sacrifice, and topography. Logistics in Greek Sanctuaries takes a completely novel perspective by shifting the focus away from the religious sphere and monumental aspects of sanctuaries to practical activity and the experience of the human visitor. Close examination of the more mundane and everyday life and activity in Greek cult places, e.g., sanitation, water and food supply, accommodation, markets, managing crowds and behavior, workers, and finances, reveals relatively unexplored facets of ancient Greek sanctuaries and offers new paths of investigation for the future.
