Title [sv]
Title [en]
Improved COMPETitiveness of European AQUAculture through regulation of biological processes underlying critical production bottlenecks (7th frame work, call: FP7-KBBE-2007-2A)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
In order to improve the Competitiveness of European Aquaculture, CompetAqua will integrate recently developed functional genomics and selected physiological tools to 1) study key endocrinological and physiological aspects of reproductive function in commercial species exhibiting a failing spawning performance, as well as the environmental and nutritional mechanisms affecting their reproduction. This will allow the development of new breeding technologies based on controlled-released hormonal therapies and breeding protocols produced by CompetAqua; 2) expand current knowledge on infection and disease resistance processes during reproduction and larval development, and the influence of different genetic, environmental and nutritional factors. This will contribute to better prevention and control of disease outbreaks and enhance survival, as well as reduce the use of chemotherapies in the industry; 3) study the ontogeny of stress response mechanisms in commercially important cultured fish species and apply this knowledge to identify markers that can be applied to monitor stress in early developing fish and major stressors experienced by larvae and young fish. This will lead to improvement of rearing conditions to optimize fish welfare, productivity and fry performance; 4) better understand the effects of specific environmental and nutritional factors on growth,
