Abstract [en]
This thesis explores the transformation of family dynamics within the context of the COVID-19 digital era, with a focus on dining habits (commensality), mental health, and social bonds. Using a mixed-methods approach, this limited scoping review draws on qualitative and quantitative data from diverse secondary sources, primarily from Western contexts. It applies theoretical frameworks such as Systems Theory and Appreciative Inquiry alongside thematic analysis. Findings suggest shifts in family practices and commensality, driven by the crisis during the pandemic, increased digital integration, and potential changes in social bonds. The analysis highlights family units' awareness of these digital shifts, revealing both challenges and innovations in maintaining modern family bonds. The study sheds light on the need for strategies to nurture resilient and adaptive family structures amid rapid digital transformations with largely unknown long-term effects. The implications for future research emphasizes renewed importance of the modern family meal and identifies research gaps. These include potential bonding with devices during meals, how friends are becoming part of our modern families through digitalization, and the development of effective means to support protective factors and relational well-being in a digitally evolving crisis hit world, toward a more conscious global mental health framework.
