Abstract [en]
Antibiotic resistance has been, and remains, a serious and complex issue in South Korea,with the resistance rate steadily increasing. To contribute to the research finding out whythis is the case, this research aimed to find out the perceptions on antibiotics and antibioticresistance among adult Koreans living in Busan. Knowledge on antibiotics and antibioticsresistance has been proven to be low in South Korea, both among health care providersand patients, especially compared to other similarly developed countries. To combatantibiotic resistance there has to be a change in the knowledge, attitudes and practicesamong people. This research was qualitative in nature, utilizing semi-structured interviewsand a focus group. From the data gathered it was found out that Confucian values have alarge part in the practices surrounding antibiotics and antibiotic resistance. It was alsodiscovered that the knowledge of both antibiotics and antibiotic resistance was lacking inspite of educational efforts.
