Abstract [en]

With the modernization of human beings’ society, many traditional, cultural, and valuable intangible cultural heritages are fading out of people’s life and memory. To stop this loss of knowledge and culture, it is important to find a way to preserve intangible cultural heritage. There are studies on different ways to preserve intangible cultural heritage, e.g., through games. However, there is a gap in knowledge regarding the universal game design framework that can help the design process. Thus, this thesis proposes a new game design framework for intangible cultural heritage preservation. The new framework provides a more detailed and focused game design framework for intangible cultural heritage preservation than the experiential gaming framework. The new game design framework is based on the experiential gaming model mainly, supplemented with the informant design method and other design methods. The feasibility of the new game design framework is checked by the case study on the game Never Alone, from its design process, game content, and players' feedback on it. Overall, the new game design framework is feasible to help preserve intangible cultural heritage through games, even though there are still limitations.
