Abstract [en]

Despite the popularity of the horror genre in video games, there remains a research gap in the exploration of the direct impacts of jump scares on player experiences. These sudden, unexpected elements have been utilized by game designers to induce fear and tension, yet their specific effects have not been thoroughly examined. This study steps into this void to investigate the role and impact of jump scares within horror video games. Utilizing an experimental horror game specifically designed for this study, two testing phases were conducted. Participants played different game versions, with and without jump scares, and their reactions were meticulously analysed. Results showed heightened peaks of reaction in game versions incorporating jump scares, followed by moments of relief, indicating lower-than-average tension levels post-scare. The game version without jump scares presented a more steady progression of tension levels. The research offers unique insights into the use of jump scares as a fear-inducing mechanic, providing valuable knowledge for game designers and laying the groundwork for future research in the horror video game genre.
