Abstract [en]

Saproxylic species make up a large portion of the biodiversity in temperate forests and are important contributors to the ecosystem. But their habitat is decreasing in Europe, due to modern forest management that leaves very little dead wood for them to inhabit. Many saproxylic species are therefore threatened. One such threatened species is Ceruchus chrysomelinus, a relict species of natural forest. It has been suggested as an umbrella species and focal species for conservation of forests in Central Europe.

To be able to safeguard populations of C. chrysomelinus it is helpful to know its habitat requirements and dispersal ability. A conservation based experimental translocation of C. chrysomelinus in 1995 to two then unoccupied but seemingly suitable locations offer a unique opportunity to quantify its dispersal ability. A previous survey 17 years after the translocation found that colonized logs were on average only 10 m from the point of introduction. Now 26 years after the translocation we repeated this survey. We also quantified the amount of dead wood in the area and assessed habitat parameters known to be of relevance for C. chrysomelinus.

We found that C. chrysomelinus, 26 years after the translocation, has colonized logs at a median of 29 m from the original point of introduction. The furthest colonized log was found 58 m from the original translocation spot. Using the same method as the previous study, we found a total of 18 colonized logs, in comparison to 5 logs in 2012. This suggests that the population of C. chrysomelinus has increased. The total amount of dead wood at the study sites was on average 105.6 m3/ha, which is on the higher end of that typically found in Fennoscandian natural old growth forests. All logs containing C. chrysomelinus were degraded by brown rot. Logs that contained C. chrysomelinus were coarser and longer compared to logs that did not contain C. chrysomelinus. However, in contrast with a previous study we found C. chrysomelinus also in relatively thin (>20 cm) and short (>3.2 m) logs.

These results support earlier statements in literature about the supposed low dispersal ability of C. chrysomelinus and indicates that it might be even lower than previously assumed. Our study also suggests that the criteria for wood suitable as habitat for C. chrysomelinus are slightly broader than that found in an earlier study in the area.
