Abstract [es]

Abstract [en]

The present paper studies the relationship between discourse context and meaning (change), exemplified in the diachrony of the modal construction <necesitar + infinitive>. The analysis of the data collected from CORDE, inspired by Koch and Oesterreichers’ (2007) model, reveals a change in the textual preferences for the construction, namely from discourse genres related to communicative distance to those typical for communicative immediacy. This textual trajectory goes hand in hand with the semantic shift seen for <necesitar + infinitive> over the centuries; from contexts of external dynamic necessity to contexts of internal (deontic) necessity. A close examination of two discourse genres, juridical prose and dramatic prose, shows a strong link between discourse context and meaning. In juridical prose, representing communicative distance, the use of <necesitar + infinitive> is an indication of diachronic continuity, with a stable preference for external dynamic necessity, whereas the innovative uses of the construction, namely internal deontic necessity, are found in dramatic prose, a genre typical of communicative immediacy.
