Stjernsunds slott i Närke och Göta kanal: Samband och växelvis samverkan
2023 (Swedish)Report (Other academic)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
The study aims to throw light on a number of aspects of teh Stjernsund estate (in the province of Närke) with its manor house and mill and the associated iron works as a place where various events related to the Göta Canal project took place. The focus is here on events during the period from the 1800s to the 1830s.
The Göta Canal was a major infrastructure project that affected the conditions under which other industrial operations and trading coul dbe carried out. The project started as a result of a broad political considerations during the th eperiod after 1809, against the background of Sweden's lpss of Finland and the creation of the new constitution. With the inauguration of Karl Johan as the heir to the throne the continued economic and industrial development in Sweden was a higher priority in the government's actions than earlier.
Olof Burenstam was owner of Stjernsund until his death in 1821. He was an important participant in the industrial and political development, even though it seems primarily from the perspective of the mill owner.
The sudy also throws light on the relation between som of the cantral actors related to Stjernsund and Göta Canal; besides Burenstam, the main leader of the Göta Canal project Baltzar von Platen, Karl Johan and the leading master builder in the region Abraham Nyström. They were all related in different ways and to Stjernsund as a geographical location. Based on archival studies some of the occassions that Karl Johan visited Stjernsund are described, even though these sesem to be rather few.
All told, the study links Olof Burenstam's mill enterprises and financial activities with the Göta Canal project in a more elaborate way than what has previously been demonstrated. there were personal connections, business connections and financial conenctions between the different actors in the Närke region around Stjernsund. The Göta Canal became a stimulus fo reconomic activity in the regiíons where it was constructed, and it involved Stjernsund in different ways. Thus the canal project did, in some respects, fulfil the objectives of in the charter of the canal company; "a help for agriculture and useful industries, promotion of trade and transport, and uninterruoted and increasing industriousness".
