Since the end of World War Two, conflicts have been on the rise and have become more violent, fragmented and protracted leading to affected populations experiencing increased intersectoral needs. The humanitarian, development and peacebuilding sectors are increasingly working in the same contexts and experiencing overlapping measures of their efforts. Frameworks and policies for more interlaced coordination of the sectors have been put in place, which has resulted in both opportunities and challenges for collaboration, especially between humanitarian action and peacebuilding, but little research has studied how humanitarian efforts can be utilized by peacebuilding initiatives in specific contexts. This qualitative desk-based study aims to explore how humanitarian action, through its methods and approaches, can be utilized to contribute to inclusive and sustainable peacebuilding through a comparative case study of Colombia and South Sudan after the implementations of their latest peace agreements. Through applying the tools of the Capability Approach and the concepts of local ownership and inclusivity within sustainable peacebuilding, the research identifies the gap in the peacebuilding implementations of the two cases and the ability to reach marginalized populations, and suggests existing humanitarian efforts that peacebuilders can utilize for collaboration to create more local ownership and inclusivity within the respective peace processes. The results provide insights into how humanitarian programming already contributes to generating peace-related outcomes in the two cases, and how these existing efforts can be utilized by peacebuilders through collaborative initiatives, such as resilience programming or common information-sharing and coordination platforms. The results further identify the challenges pertained to these collaborative efforts and suggests measures to overcome them.
