While Neoplatonic metaphysics suggests a high level of independence from anything bodily for the soul and its essential powers, Plotinus remains realistic and intrigued by the conditions that the embodiment presents to the realization of those powers. For the World Soul and embodied lower human soul, a suitable body is an essential part of this realization. The type of sense organs, for example, affect the way sense perception gets actualized. The view originates from both Alcibiades I and Timaeus, the latter providing the framework where embodiment involves some lesser causal efficacy, but where the conditions it presents to realization of these powers do not exist independently from ensoulment.
