The Pros and Cons of Applying Virtual Reality to 3D Modeling for Videogames

Abstract [en]

Virtual reality (VR) is today used professionally for design and simulation in industry and education. With new software developments for VR that makes 3D modeling available, an interest of incorporating the method in the 3D modeling pipeline for games has started. To evaluate if VR modeling could enhance the pipeline for games, knowledge about the advantages and disadvantages of a VR work method is needed. This thesis aims to draw out the pros and cons of incorporating VR modeling to the 3D modeling pipeline for games. To find the pros and cons, a literature study was conducted. To develop the findings, two experienced 3D artists with knowledge in the field of VR modeling were interviewed. To verify the pros and cons, a quantitative experiment was carried out, in which subjects with experience of desktop sculpting and modeling tried VR modeling and rated the experience in a Liker scale questionnaire. The tests render a set of pros and cons with VR modeling applied to modeling for games. It also suggests that VR modeling could be incorporated in the early stages of 3D sculpting to enhance the speed of rough sculpting and concepting.
