Historical Video Games: Using Video Games to Create Interest and Knowledge in History
Uppsala University, Disciplinary Domain of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts, Department of Game Design.
2018 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

This thesis investigates the potential use of historically themed video games in the school subject history. Using the game Total War: Shogun 2 as a representative of historically themed video games, data was produced using questionnaires sent to two different groups of participants. The first group consisted of volunteers from the Total War forums and the second group of volunteers from the Game Design education at Uppsala University. The questions in the questionnaire were of two kinds, those that asked the participants’ opinion about their knowledge and interest and another that asked the participants to recall historical events both inside and outside of the game. This was done with the purpose to see whether a game like Shogun 2 incites knowledge and interest in its players or not. The results from the questionnaires showed that there existed a correlation between hours played of the game and the participants interest in the historical period and history as a subject. The only participants that did not feel that the game enhanced their interest were the participants that had played less than ten hours.
