Abstract [en]

Streaming services like Twitch.tv and Let’s Plays have become a large part of the gaming community. Game developers have started to use streamers and YouTubers to market their games in hopes of increasing profits, However, is it a viable option for every type of game? This investigation focuses on the answering the question “What effect does streaming and Let’s plays have on linear, narratively driven, single player games?” To answer this question, an online survey was sent out to specific gaming and stream communities, and interviews with developers of narratively driven games were conducted. The starting hypothesis was that there would be diminishing results. If the viewer watched the entire game, or a large part of the story, they would be less likely to purchase the game. Unexpectedly, this investigation could not draw any concrete conclusion concerning the effects of streaming and Let’s Plays. The financial effects of streaming and Let’s Plays depended heavily on the game, how much interaction there is, and other circumstances concerning design and story.
