Abstract [en]

As we move further into the 21st century, Viking culture and characters seem to become increasingly prevalent in media such as TV-series, movies and videogames each day. Series such as Vikings, The Last Kingdom, and Norsemen, as well as games such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Elder Scrolls Online, God of War, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Assassins Creed: Valhalla each tackles the subject matter with varying amounts of historical accuracy, intended or otherwise. But how important is historical accuracy when it comes to depicting historical cultures, what makes a Viking character believable in general, and what effects does historical accuracy actually have on players. To further understand these subjects, we will use a semi-structured method to interview a number of participants with previous experience with historical games to explore what their views on anachronism, believability, and Vikings really are. What these interviews led to was that the participants did not find historical accuracy to be that important in a game, unless the game does not set out to be historically accurate from the start.
