Risk- and protective factors for mental health among mothers in a refugee context - a study in a Ugandan refugee camp (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
The refugee crisis stands as one of the world's most pressing humanitarian challenges today, with over 110 million people forcibly displaced. While prior research has established a higher prevalence of mental health issues among refugees in general, the specific mental health impact on mothers in refugee situations remains less explored. The current study aimed to explore various risk and protective factors for mental health among mothers in refugee camps. This was done by investigating how the factors of potentially Traumatic Events (PTE) (towards the individual; towards the environment), religiosity, number of children, education, trust in community, social support and social participation relate to self-rated depression symptoms in 295 mothers in refugee camps in Uganda. Data was collected from the participants through interviews and questionnaires. Multiple regression analyses showed that risk factors were PTE (towards the individual; towards the environment) and, surprisingly, high values of social support. These factors significantly contributed to increased self-reported depression symptoms, and PTE towards the individual had the predominant contribution. Protective factors were access to social support and trust in community, which significantly contributed to reduced self-reported depression symptoms. Access to social support had the predominant contribution. The consequences of poor mental health, the possibilities of social exchange and the different ways in which the significant factors affect the individual are discussed as potential causes of the results.
