Potential production from photovoltaics on the buildings of the Church of Sweden

Abstract [en]

This study evaluates the potential and profitability of photovoltaic (PV) power production and battery storage systems for five selected parishes within the Church of Sweden. Through simulations and economic analysis, it is demonstrated that PV systems are generally more profitable in southern Sweden (price areas 3 and 4) due to higher electricity prices. Despite thatthe azimuth and tilt affect the production, installations on east and west-facing roofs remain profitable. The study reveals that buildings with high self-consumption rates achieve better economic outcomes compared to those with higher surplus production sold back to the grid. However, battery storage systems are not found to be economically viable under current conditions in this study. Scaling up the findings suggests that the Church of Sweden can potentially produce 0.17 TWh of solar electricity annually, surpassing its 2027 target. Future research should explore ground-based PV installations, energy communities, how benefits as sale on the ancillary service market could effect the profitability of the batteries and integration with electric vehicle charging infrastructure to enhance sustainability.
