Abstract [en]

Aim: Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is the psychiatric diagnosis with the highest mortality  rate and its etiology is still partly unknown. The aim for this qualitative interview study is to research discordant monozygotic twins' own views on the reasons why only one of them developed AN. With this study we hoped to contribute to the understanding of the etiology of AN and the relationship between genetics and  environment and contribute to the qualitative research on what the patients and their next of kin themselves think are the reasons for the development of the sickness. Method: We used reflexive thematic analysis. Ten monozygotic twins discordant for AN (M= 33.1 years, SD= 9.14 years) participated in the study. Results: Eight themes were formulated based on the participants' answers; To live up to demands, To fit in a narrow mold, Personal characteristics, To deal with changes and crises, To deal with  difficult emotions, Safe or unsafe in close relationships?, The twinship and Other  psychiatric illnesses. Conclusion: All participants answered that multiple factors contributed to the development of AN which aligns with previous research, however not having talked about emotions in their childhood environment and how this could  have affected the development of AN was emphasized.
