Abstract [en]

This study has looked at character choice preferences in the RPG game Divinity: Original Sin 2. This game in particular offers a unique viewpoint as it offers both premade characters made by the developers, with unique skills, voice and aesthetics, and custom characters, allowing players to fashion a protagonist to their liking. We wanted to know how many people preferred one or the other. To find this out we made a survey, with the question “Did you choose a custom or premade character for your first playthrough” being the highlight. We sent out the survey to various online community centers, and got a response. In total 145 people responded, and the result indicated that 53.8% of players prefer premade characters while 46.2% prefer custom characters. A significant data point is that a majority of respondents have high amounts of playtime in the game (200+ hours). This result made us conclude that the preference between custom and premade characters is about equal, but only for a more passionate slice of the total Divinity 2 player base.
