Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer and cause of cancer-related death in women. Fifteen percent of breast cancers in Sweden could be prevented by increasing physical activity, reducing body weight and alcohol consumption. Understanding risk perceptions can support the development of more effective risk communication.

Aim: To investigate how women from the public perceive breast cancer risk, their own risk of breast cancer and their attitudes towards breast cancer risk information.

Methods: The study design was qualitative with 12 semi-structured interviews. The informants were recruited and selected using purposive sampling. Data were analysed inductively with thematic content analysis according to Burnard et al. (2008).

Results: Four themes with nine sub-themes were identified. The main themes were The perception of breast cancer as a disease and its risk factors, The effect of lifestyle habits is underestimated at group level but perceived as protective for the individual, Willingness to make behavioural changes to reduce one’s breast cancer risk, and How the recipient wants to see risk information to “see” the risk information. Informants perceived breast cancer as a life-changing, common but curable disease. The disease was perceived as difficult to influence and that it requires very poor lifestyle habits to have an impact. The importance of lifestyle habits for breast cancer risk was underestimated. Self-perceived breast cancer risk and willingness to reduce one’s own breast cancer risk through behaviour change tended to be low. Informants wanted to receive risk information about breast cancer, even if it might trigger negative feelings.

Conclusion: The informants’ perception of the modifiable risk factors and their importance for breast cancer risk was generally low, underestimated and in many cases incorrect. As breast cancer is preventable, the study emphasizes the importance of evidence-based knowledge dissemination according to the needs and understanding of Swedish women.
