Abstract [en]
This thesis investigates the personnel requirements for the operation and maintenance of nuclear
power plants in Sweden, with particular focus on future staffing needs related to the national
nuclear expansion. Using a combination of literature review and internal data provided by
Kärnkraftsäkerhet och Utbildning AB (KSU), the study estimates the required workforce for
seven key technical roles: control room operators, station technicians, mechanical engineers,
electrical engineers, instrumentation and control engineers, chemists, and radiation protection
technicians.
The analysis includes comparisons between future large-scale reactors (LSRs) and future small
modular reactors (SMRs). Calculations were performed in dynamic spreadsheets and are
presented in tables, including staffing per megawatt electrical output (MWe). The results indicate
that SMRs may require fewer staff per unit, but more staff per MWe. Study highlights the
importance of long-term strategic workforce planning to ensure operational safety and regulatory
compliance. This thesis contributes to the understanding of competence supply challenges within
the Swedish nuclear sector and supports planning for a sustainable nuclear workforce.
