Effort-reward imbalance and academic motivation among students attending Swedish universities (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
In reference to the widespread societal issue of a decline in mental health, in which academic students constitute a substantial part, this study aimed to examine the relationship between an Effort-Reward Imbalance (ERI) and academic motivation among Swedish university students. Furthermore, this study explores whether choice of degree programme moderates the relationship. Based on theoretical framework, more specifically the model of ERI and Self-Determination Theory, two hypotheses were proposed in accordance with the purpose of this study. Additionally, two research questions investigated the moderating effect of degree programmes. This cross-sectional study consisted of 92 participants, who completed an online questionnaire. Results indicated that a majority of the students experience an imbalance, in which rewards outweigh their efforts. ERI and extrinsic motivation were found to be significantly positively associated, whereas no correlation was found between ERI and intrinsic motivation. ERI was shown to be a significant predictor of extrinsic motivation. Choice of degree programme showed no moderating effect in either relationship. However, potential differences were identified that warrant further investigation. In conclusion, the link between ERI and extrinsic motivation was supported. A moderating effect of degree programme was not supported, and further research is recommended to better understand the implications of ERI and motivation in different academic contexts.
