Abstract [en]

Geothermal energy, one of the most abundant yet underutilized renewable resource globally, offers significant potential for power generation, scalable heating and cooling, and increased energy security. Despite its advantages and demonstrated capacity, its integration into national energy strategies remains limited. The European Geothermal Action Plan, expected in 2026, is likely to become a key driver in advancing geothermal energy acrosss Europe. In Sweden, geothermal systems based on ground source heat pumps are well established; however, comprehensive assessments of deeper geothermal resources are still lacking. Existing data gaps and inconsistent reporting obscure the true potential of geothermal energy, hindering its inclusion in national energy strategies. The funding landscape for renewable energy research and innovation does not align with the national supply of energy. This study identifies opportunities for stakeholders and highlights the need to develop strategies for integrating geothermal heat, cooling, and power production into the national renewable and fossil free energy mix. Collaborative efforts, targeted funding, and strategic policy development will be essential to realizing the full potential of geothermal energy for energy transition in Sweden.
