The aim of this chapter is to provide an overview of Sweden’s approach to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Given the diversity of engagement with ESD, this chapter should be seen a starting point for initial engagement with ESD in the Swedish context and not as a comprehensive account. It summarizes key developments that have been formative for overall trends and trajectories in the national engagement with this global policy initiative. Its target audience is hence Swedish students and foreign researchers and students who are interested in the specifics of Swedish approaches. The chapter also provides a brief account of the context and historical background of ESD in the country, and summarizes its position in education policy and syllabi. Further, it sets out how ESD is understood and translated into teaching practice. Finally, the chapter outlines emerging trends and issues in the context of policy and research.
