Abstract [en]
This work in progress innovative practice category paper presents an example of how ethical reflection on electrified aviation can be included in the electrical engineering classroom. The specific case is about engineering ethics when working with electrification in the aviation sector. The competence needed when electrifying aircraft and airports relates to interdisciplinary competence. The students are expected to reflect on ethical issues regarding electrical aircraft, including, for example, material use, mineral extraction, safety aspects, working conditions, and geopolitical issues. Engineering ethics in electrified aviation is important for the students when they meet their future profession as engineers in industry. The ethical aspects can be implemented in classroom discussions among the students, facilitated by the teacher. The preliminary findings from student and teacher responses indicate that ethical aspects of electrification in the aviation sector are seen as something important that can support the transition from being a student to being an engineer and when learning and working with sustainable aviation. Ethical reflection is found especially rewarding in relation to emerging technologies that are possible to influence. Suggestions of future work includes further stimulating and exploring student understanding of ethics in electrified aviation using online tools.
