The Baltic Battle of Books: Formation and Relocation of European Libraries in the Confessional Age (c. 1500–c. 1650) and Their Afterlife2023Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This book is about the creation, relocation, and reconstruction of libraries between the late Middle Ages and the Age of Confessionalization, that is, the era of religious division and struggle in Northern Europe following the Reformation and Counter-Reformation in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. At the time, different creeds clashed with each other, but it was also a period in which the political and intellectual geography of Europe was redrawn. Centuries-old political, economic, and cultural networks fell apart and were replaced with new ones. Books and libraries were at the centre of these cultural, political, and religious transformations, frequently seized as war booties and appropriated by their new owners in distant locations.

Books from Poznań at the Uppsala University Library2017In: The Central European Journal Of Social Sciences And Humanities (CEJSH), ISSN 1897-0788, p. 319-328Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In the collections of the Uppsala University Library there are many books that were owned by libraries in Poznań until 1655, when Swedish forces took them as war booty and sent them to Sweden. In this article the aim is to recapitulate the history of this Poznań-collection, i.e. the library itself, the capture in 1655, its transport to and later destiny in Sweden, partly by means of material evidence. Traces from all these events are still visible in the books themselves and they are of course essential for understanding the collection in its present context. In addition, there are catalogues and registers from the time that help us in the reconstruction of this important historical library.

Literary Spoils of War in Uppsala in Practice: Controversial Theology2021In: Biblioteka, ISSN 1506-3615, Vol. 34, no 25, p. 127-140Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Religious conflicts did not only take place on battlefields in the 17th cen-tury, but in far wider contexts. We see them also in propaganda, poetry, sermons andacademic discourse. When the literary spoils of war were taken by the Swedish fromCatholic libraries in Poland to the Lutheran Uppsala University, many books werenot highly valued. These Catholic books ended up stored separately from the ‘soundand pure’ volumes found in the first library building in Uppsala. In this article, it isshown how these Catholic books did at times prove useful, at least in the field of po-lemical theology. In fact, teaching at the university took an increasingly anti-Catholicdirection after the arrival of the collections from Braniewo and Frombork to Uppsala, with the main confessional enemy apparently being Robert Bellarmine.

    Abstract [en]

Uppsala University Library received several literary spoils of war that had been taken by Swedish armies from Jesuit colleges and other Catholic institutions in the seventeenth century. This article argues that the first university library building in Uppsala, which was built in two floors, kept good and useful literature on the upper floor, where the books were arranged according to faculties, and literature of less use on the lower, where the books were arranged according to a system similar to those in Jesuit libraries. In Lutheran Uppsala, most Catholic literature was therefore located in the lower library. In previous research on this library, its structure has not been fully acknowledged. Hence, several misleading conclusions have been drawn.

    Abstract [en]

When Uppsala University Library was formally founded in 1620 and 1621, the book depot of the Crown, previously located on Gråmunkeholmen (today’s Riddarholmen) in Stockholm, was donated there. This collection inter alia contained the confiscated library of a Swedish nobleman and remnants from medieval Swedish monastery libraries. As Otto Walde conclusively proved in 1915, it also contained the Swedish parts of the library of the Swedish King Sigismund (Sigismund III in Poland), who was dethroned in Sweden in 1599. Sigismund’s books were soon scattered and spread among the rest of the book collections of Uppsala University Library, which were arranged according to subject, without any indication of provenance. The aim of the present article is to report what we currently know about Sigismund’s collection. Step by step, not least by the research of Otto Walde, but also by the ongoing work at the library, we are now able to know more titles and much more about the contents and destinies of this Royal book collection than what was previously known.

The Early Latin Poetry of Sylvester Johannis Phrygius: Edited, with Introduction, Translation and Commentary2007Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis contains three major portions of the early Latin poetry of the theologian Sylvester Johannis Phrygius (1572–1628), one of the most pro-lific and important Swedish poets at the turn of the 17th century.

The verses exhibit marked influence from the Protestant Universities of Northern Germany at which Phrygius had studied. There Lutheranism had coalesced with the Humanist movement, so as to produce a highly creative cultural environment. It was through Jena, Wittenberg and Rostock that the learned culture of the Renaissance found its way into Sweden.

The first section consists of poems from Phrygius’ Ecloga prima print (1599), whose main part is an eclogue, a pastoral dirge on the death of the daughter of the bishop of Linköping. Vergil’s first eclogue is the model of the text, which is characterized by allegorical messages so typical of the period. The second consists of Threnologia dramatica, a dramatic lamentation in elegiac distichs written around 1600 in memory of King John III of Sweden. The third section is the Centuria prima print (1602), the main part of which consists of captioned moral distichs arranged in emblematic manner. These verses were meant to give guidance to a young nobleman on the virtuous path of life, as well as rhetorical and mnemonic aid. Commonplace material is present in abundance.

Altogether these poetic works strongly reflect the literary ideals of the Renaissance as well as historical realities in Sweden at the time, such as the civil war and the struggle against the forces of the Counter-Reformation. The aim of the thesis is to provide an interpretative context for Phrygius’ poems by finding and identifying Phrygius’ literary models and sources, allusions and intertexts, both ancient and contemporary ones, and to show how these texts mirror the dramatic events in Sweden during the decades around 1600.

    Abstract [en]

The eighteenth‑century library at the magnificent iron making estate of Leufstabruk one hour north of Uppsala (Sweden) is located in a small exquisite pavilion next to the manor house. There the absolute majority of the books are kept until this day in their original places, arranged according a system of the time. Having been an entailed estate within the noble family with Dutch origins De Geer from 1730 until 1986, the collections of today most of all mirror the interests of its member Charles (1720–1778), as well as to a minor degree his son Charles (1746–1805), his daughter Hedvig Ulrika (1752–1813) and some more. The present article wants to give an updated image of this library, based on previous research as well as a recently finished infrastructure project, whereby knowledge of and access to its collections, which are awaiting to be explored further, have been strongly increased.

    Abstract [en]

It is well known that Swedish armies took a number of literary spoils ofwar from Poland in the 17th century, among others, the library of the Jesuit College inBraniewo in 1626. This article discusses how the collections from Braniewo were re-ceived and arranged in the first library building of Uppsala University, to which theyhad been donated by the Swedish King Gustavus II Adolphus. Books with contentsrelated to theology are discussed in particular. As is shown in the article, books fromBraniewo by Catholic authors or editors that were of a more neutral nature, such asbooks on Church history, Bibles and Bible concordances, were generally consideredmore useful at this Lutheran university than books by Catholic authors containing, for instance, Bible commentaries, sermons and dogmatics.

    Abstract [en]

The implementation of RDA poses questions regarding its application on early printed material, e.g., concerning transcription of title information. Cataloging rules used today for early printed books often include a normalization that is misleading, both for libraries and for users. In this article, ideas concerning transcription according to RDA are discussed. These ideas focus on the double purposes of identifying and retrieving an item. For the first purpose, I suggest a transcription of the title, which closely follows the original (“take what you see”), and for the second, a completely normalized variant title.

    Abstract [en]

In the eighteenth century, the entomologist and industrialist Charles de Geer (1720–1778), who spent his formative years in the Netherlands, established a library in his manor at Leufstabruk. Since 1986 this library has been owned by Uppsala University Library. This volume contains essays on different aspects of this historical book collection, as well as of similar country house libraries in Sweden and abroad. It is the result of an international symposium held in Leufstabruk and Uppsala in June 2022.
